Sinewave Surfer is more personal than just a bass-music reference.

When I was DJing, I had an entire series of breakbeat mixtapes called Sinewave Surfer. The name came from the physical side of electronic music — low frequencies moving through a room, through the floor and through your body. A sine wave is one of the simplest representations of that low-frequency movement, and I always liked the idea of treating it as something you could actually ride.

Years later, I turned that old mixtape name into this piece.

I wanted the artwork to combine a few things that have always been part of my life: breakbeats, rave and DJ culture, and the comic-book superheroes I grew up with. The character isn’t meant to be anyone specific. He’s essentially a superhero for the sound system, riding a wave made out of bass instead of water.

So this one connects two different periods for me. Sinewave Surfer started as the name on my breakbeat mixes. Now it exists as a piece of artwork I can actually wear.
