WHAT REMAINS HUMAN

4RCH1V3 started with ROM, one of the stranger science-fiction comic characters I remember from the 1980s. I didn’t want to reproduce the character as he was. I wanted to take the basic idea behind him, alter it, and bring the question at the center of that story into the present.

What interested me was never simply the robot.

ROM gives up his human body to become something powerful enough to protect other people. The transformation gives him strength, but it also removes nearly everything on the outside that once identified him as human.

That became the idea behind 4RCH1V3:

What remains human when the recognizable parts of the person are gone?

We tend to identify people through appearance, voice, memory, personality and all the other things we can see from the outside. But if those things change, maybe humanity has less to do with the body than we think.

Maybe it survives in the choices.

Compassion. Loyalty. Sacrifice. Restraint. Responsibility. Choosing to protect someone when there is nothing to gain from doing it.

That question feels different now than it did in an ’80s science-fiction comic. Technology increasingly sits between us and the world around us. It extends what we can remember, create, communicate and accomplish. The separation between the person and the tools they use is becoming harder to define.

4RCH1V3 is my updated version of that old science-fiction question.

Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle.

Iron at low temperature and avoid ironing directly on the print.
